What is a Webinar?
Short for Web seminar, a Webinar is a presentation, workshop or seminar that is transmitted via the Internet. A key feature of a Webinar is its interactive elements - the ability to give, receive and discuss information in real time. Participants are able to attend via their own computer or any terminal that has access to the internet. The only limitations are that a broadband connection (high speed internet) is preferable and you must be able to download and install a small piece of software prior to the session starting (some networks have a restriction on this).
The only piece of equipment required by participants is a set of headphones to listen with and a microphone to speak with. These are available from most electronic suppliers (e.g. Computer stores, Dick Smiths) and cost around $20 - $30 for a reasonable set.
Webinar technology has come a long way over the past few years. It has become increasingly common for tech savvy organisations to use this medium to present new products or demonstrate, train and educate their internal and external stakeholders.
The primary limitation up until recently to engaging with Webinar technology for our own use has been the cost, keeping it in the domain of large organisations and corporations. Because we now have ever-increasing access to broad band in our homes, schools and workplaces and thanks to affordable products like GotoWebinar, we can now seriously consider webinars as part of our every day business communication.
Today’s online seminars use an uncomplicated software interface to make them a real time and interactive learning experiences. Participants are able to ask the presenter, or presenters, questions and get feedback immediately. The presenter is able to conduct polls and ask questions, and interact with a small or large audience using a combination of verbal and visual ques. Participants may receive course materials by e-mail prior to a Webinar and will be able to view the instructor's PowerPoint slides during the session. These types of online courses have a much higher impact than simply reading material on the web.
Webinars offer exceptional convenience and are very cost-effective. No travel is required.
